Deposit Insurance

The deposit insurance system in Lithuania began operating in 1997 as an insurance of deposits of residents in 
banks. 
Since mid-2002, it has covered the insurance of deposits of natural and legal persons held in banks and 
credit unions. Currently, the Lithuanian deposit and liability insurance system is harmonised with EU law and 
complies with the main principles of the deposit insurance system of EU countries.

Liability insurance of investors

The Lithuanian liability insurance system insures the liabilities of banks, financial brokerage firms and management 
companies entitled to provide investment services to investors.

Since mid-2002, the Public Institution “Deposit and Investment Insurance” has started insuring the liabilities of financial 
institutions to investors. Currently, the Lithuanian deposit and liability insurance system is harmonised with EU law and 
complies with the main principles of the deposit insurance system of EU countries.
