Public survey on deposit insurance
The public institution „Deposit and Investment Insurance” in Lithuania takes care of your deposits held in banks and credit unions and is the guarantor of the financial stability of the entire country. In carrying out its activities, the public institution „Deposit and Investment Insurance” also participates in the 2024-2028 action plan for public financial education approved by the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania and seeks not only to ensure, but also to increase the awareness of the Deposit Insurance System, therefore it publishes additional information to the public about deposit and liability insurance and its activities.
In order to assess the knowledge of the population about the deposit insurance system, the Public Institution „Deposit and Investment Insurance” conducts a survey of the country’s population every year.
We share the results of the survey, conducted in May 2025, with you:
- 81 percent of the country’s population knows that deposits are insured by deposit insurance – 64 percent (up from 61 percent in 2024) know, 17 percent have heard something about it.
- 47 percent of respondents correctly indicate that the maximum amount of payment in the event of a credit institution’s bankruptcy is EUR 100,000.
- 10 percent of respondents correctly believe that a depositor could withdraw the insurance benefit within 5 years from the date of the insured event.
- 34 percent (up from 31 percent in 2024) of respondents know that the Public Institution „Deposit and Investment Insurance” is responsible for paying out insurance benefits.
The survey surveyed 1,015 respondents. The entire territory of the country was surveyed. Residents of the country aged 18–75 were surveyed.
The survey results show that although the majority of the population is aware of the deposit and liability insurance system, there is still a lack of detailed information about the insured amount, calculation of benefits or the term for withdrawing benefits, and a significant part of the population mistakenly believes that another institution is responsible for paying benefits.
